Good luck, these are probably scarce as hen's teeth by now since DIYers normally gut old out of date PA for parts.

I suggested that Heather post here.

    Welcome Heather!

She's in the process of re-populating a pair of Model 15 cabinets, with a load that is perhaps an upgrade/improvement on the stock 15. I'm pretty sure they are early/series 1 boxes with a standard 12 inch woofer opening, not the proprietary dimension the later style woofer required.

I would opine that she would also be interested in individual parts, particularly a pair of 32B/C horns.

    Welcome, Heather!

Didn't connect the new moniker with you until Bowtie pointed it out. You'll find a new group of good folks here now that you are wading into Altec territory. Like your other friends, I'm eagerly watching to see what you think about Altec since you've been such a long-time JBL fan. I try to imagine myself trying to learn all the JBL nomenclature (too many numbers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). I think you'll not only find Altec to be a pleasant new audio frontier, but a lot easier to remember the numbers, too, since a lot of Altec gear actually has a NAME attached to it!

Sorry, never sure which name works best - Heather, hjames, or thewebgal ... but its all me!
And y'all have been a real friendly buncha folks! I feel really welcome here!

Still trying to figure the best approach for populating those Model 15 cabinets -
I'd really love to find a reasonable pair of (stock) 32B horns and do them right.

I could always drop in a pair of JBL 2214 woofers I've had for quite a while -
(from L100T, L100T3, 4425 and other models) They're nice punchy 12s that do go pretty high,
and they'd make a nice bottom end for a pair of 2 ways! (and the price is really good!)
They'd at least work until I find the right ALTEC woofer, but the horn should come first!

I'm the big-eyed squid on this board just mostly sitting by as I absorb the incredible amount of Altec history and lore from the real experts. (And it's not unusual for me to read thru some of these postings ten times just to find all the verbs and nouns in an effort to understand - at least theoretically - what some of these guys are talking about. Even then, being able to diagram a sentence doesn't help, as I think I started way too late in this game to ever get a comfortable handle on it.)

That said, it seems to me that if you really want to get a taste of what Altec has to offer, you should stick to the general Altec configuration - a fifteen inch woofer crossed over to a horn of your taste. (I know that your taste hasn't developed yet, but you gotta start somewhere.) Using even a simple formula like that has allowed a relative rookie like me to build a darn nice-to-listen-to system.

I just wish it was still relatively inexpensive to do so.

All right, I'm back to watching where you go from here.

Ah! Never could 'warm up' to the post Jim Lansing 'sound', so don't follow JBL forums other than the occasional info search for others.

    Welcome indeed!

[Early] Altec [Lansing] = the real W.E./Lansing 'sound', a blend of the best and brightest the pioneers of audio could conceive with a virtually unlimited budget, so one way for ~replicating this with a M15 cab:

32B, 414B, 802D, N800D [16 ohm system] driven with a matching impedance low/no -fb tube amp, or better yet, one with [variable DF] tone controls. Don't recall the 15's tuning, but ~42-46 Hz is the goal.

Once you move away from 'vintage' to the digital age, a fairly comprehensive amount of passive EQ is required to mimic it and a powerful, super clean, ultra wide BW Class A-B amp to offset all the added series resistance with at least 10 W in Class A, i.e. making it a current Vs voltage controlled amp.

If digital EQ is used and especially if the XO is too, then experiment with a cheap 25 ohm pot to dial in the amount of series resistance that sounds best overall in room at the listening position and replace it with an Ohmite or similar [adjustable] non-inductive power resistor and preferably use smaller resistors to create a a higher accuracy resistor 'bank' to get the desired resistance, power ratings.

Of course if your budget and/or DIY amp building skills are high enough, then you can skip all this and use a Pass Labs hybrid or similar to dial them in.

    Early Cuyler(Unknown Hinson)?

    No way!

If you don't know who he is, i urge you to suffer thru a couple episodes of "Squidbillies"

The sound on the videos sucks. But, Peace Love and Hard Liquor is a great tune, and it's worth going to see Unknown perform just for that tune alone.

when I first started watching the video, I was thinking "why does he have a headset mike on, when he has a perfectly good mike on the stand?"
